Jan Atkinson was born in Toronto and as a young adult moved to Cobourg Ontario. She still lives in Cobourg with her spouse but spends her summers in the Rideau Lakes area. She loves being in the little towns of Perth and Westport with their thriving art communities. Jan has been involved in creating art for many years, even while working for various service industries. She co-owned a fitness centre in Cobourg and always has a smile at the ready.

Jan has travelled the world from Europe to Central America but much of her inspiration comes from the villages of Québec and the Maritimes. She says: “I was intrigued by how homes were built on the edge of hills and did not tumble down the hillside in bad weather.”

She has been influenced by many artists and her paintings and styles have evolved over the years. She painted in oils but found that she was too impatient to wait for the paints to dry. She got many hours of pleasure painting floor cloths and making floral arrangements. Jan loved an artist from Québec who painted in vibrant colours and that was the turning point for her current offerings. The acrylic whimsical landscape paintings are the ones that most resonate with Jan. Working with vibrant bold colours is both uplifting and fun for Jan and her goal is to bring the same feelings to others.

Jan has been in galleries and shows from Toronto to Ottawa and is very grateful and excited to be participating in live shows again. She just loves being in shows in Carleton Place as the show visitors are so very well informed.
